Yes, Sweaty Trump Fell Asleep at the RNC Convention — and We’re Not Talking About Closing His Eyes During the Prayer

So the question is: Did he or didn’t he? As in, did Donald Trump fall asleep during the Republican National Convention on Monday? We certainly know he had a penchant for doing this during his hush-money trial. Now there’s a video doing the social media rounds that seems to show Trump nodding off during a speech at the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. And that video is quickly going viral.

The clip shows Trump appearing to drift off in the middle of Harmeet Dhillon’s speech while his running mate JD Vance, seated next to him, has his eyes wide open, Newsweek reports.

Of course, almost as soon as Trump did this, the video was posted ASAP on X by numerous users and Trump critics jumped on this, with huge numbers following the clip. And there were comments. Oh yes, there were. User @plies, who is no fan of Trump fired this salvo:

“🤣🤣🤣🤣 He Can’t Stay Awake At The RNC!! He Sleep Bih!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣 The Media Give Dude All The Passes!!!” This post amassed more than 6.9 million views by Tuesday evening.

CBS News verification producer Jim La Porta did some sniffing around, trying to clarify the situation on X. He wrote that it looked like Trump’s eyes were closed not because he was asleep but because the clip was allegedly taken during Pastor James Roemke’s prayer.

But then Newsweek did its own investigation and found that the widely circulated clip occurred four minutes later when Dhillon was speechifying. Dhillon is a National Committeewoman of the Republican National Committee for California. She’s also a regular guest on Fox News.

As Roemke led the prayer, most of the audience closed their eyes, including Trump and his sidekick Vance. Some users misleadingly posted Roemke’s prayer clip, falsely claiming Trump was sleeping during the prayer by cropping out other audience members who also had their eyes closed.

Anything to cause a stir, I guess.

Progressive user @acnewsitics turned some of Trump’s criticisms of President Biden back on him, comparing the moment to rhetoric Trump and others have used to describe Biden’s age and infirmity.

“If Trump can’t stay awake at his own convention, how is he going to stay awake for America? I think it’s time he should step down and let someone much younger and who is not a convicted felon take his place.” This post had garnered over 1.6 million views by Tuesday morning.

Both the clips below show Trump catching a scant few zzzzz’s. I’m telling you it’s hard being an old fart these days especially after getting your ear redesigned by a shooter. And then you have to go and wear a feminine hygiene product on your wounded ear.

Then there’s those Trump critics who misleadingly posted the wrong wrongitty clip, where we see Trump’s eyes closed during the prayer. This includes user @iamgabesanchez, who wrote:

“Trump fell asleep at the RNC. On the first night. He just got there.” This video, with the misleading clip, received more than 10 million views as of Tuesday evening.

Well oops, even the good guys goof every once in a while.

This serves Trump right since he’s continually criticized and mocked Biden, calling him “Sleepy Joe,” trying to denigrate his fitness to serve as president. Biden, 81, is the oldest president in American history, and I might add, has been honest enough to say he “almost fell asleep” during his debate performance in late June.

Well, guess what, do you think Trump would admit if he almost fell asleep during such a critical time?

Perhaps we should nickname Trump by calling him “the convicted felon president.” It fits, doesn’t it?
