During an appearance on MSNBC on Thursday morning, former Rep. Charlie Dents (R-PA) claimed that Donald Trump’s faltering poll numbers can be attributed to the fact that his act is getting old and and he’s leaving voters “exhausted” with his complaints.
Speaking on a panel hosted by Ana Cabrera, Dent explained that the former president isn’t doing himself any favors with his “muddled” message and is therefore handing his opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, a helping hand with her campaign.
“What do you think that says about which message is resonating in states likes yours?” host Cabrera asked.
“What is happening with Donald Trump is people are getting a little tired of him right now,” Dent offered. “I think he hurt himself on the border deal and, when he blew up the border deal, he muddled the message and he gave Harris an opportunity to say ‘I am for border assistance.'”
Speaking of the state he represented in Congress for 12 years, he elaborated, “In Pennsylvania, I think she will over-perform in the Philadelphia media market and she needs to. I think women’s health, abortion rights, will be a big issue here. Post-Dobbs — we have not seen an election post-Dobbs, and Trump has performed better as polls suggested, but it seems like she has a slight advantage.”
Asked about the darker tone the Trump campaign has taken with racist attacks on immigrants, he pointed out, “It’s almost inexplicable what he’s doing. He’s supposed to try and broaden his base and he never does that, just doubles down on the MAGA agenda.”
‘He has such a low ceiling, it never made any sense to me that he has not expanded his base,” Dent told the host. “He should be doing that and reaching out, but when you are talking about eating cats and dogs in Ohio and other bizarre things he has been doing, his temperament.”
“I am not shocked that he seems to be declining in the polls; it’s exhausting and offending people. I can’t explain the inexplicable,” he concluded.
