Internet Abuzz Over Unearthed Trump Post Calling for ‘Suspension of the Constitution’ to Retain Power

An old post by Donald Trump suggesting that baseless claims of voter fraud could justify suspending the U.S. Constitution has ignited a fresh wave of outrage.

In December 2022, Trump used his social media platform Truth Social to push the “Big Lie,” arguing that it warranted the “termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution.”

“Our great ‘Founders’ did not want, and would not condone, False & Fraudulent Elections!” Trump declared in the post.

The resurfaced post stirred up significant reactions on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday night. Political experts and social media influencers quickly highlighted it.

David Corn, Washington D.C. bureau chief for Mother Jones and MSNBC analyst, tweeted a screenshot of the post, questioning, “Yet again, Donald Trump calls for suspending the US Constitution so he can be restored to power. Will this be front-page news?”

Democratic strategist Keith Boykin retweeted Corn’s post with added commentary: “Trump calls for the termination of the US Constitution. Yes, the same Constitution the president must take an oath to ‘preserve, protect and defend.’ A presidential candidate threatening to terminate the Constitution is dangerous and disqualifying and should not be normalized.”

In reaction, the Republicans Against Trump account noted that while the post is not new, it remains relevant, urging that it should be covered in the media and addressed in upcoming debates.
