On Sunday, former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) stated that there is “absolutely no chance” that former President Reagan would support former President Trump if he were alive, as she doubled down on her opposition to Trump.
“There is absolutely no chance that Ronald Reagan would be supporting Donald Trump. Donald Trump doesn’t stand for any of the things that Ronald Reagan did, and it’s another place where I would urge my Republican colleagues, but in the Congress, but across the country, to really look at Donald Trump’s policies, to really look at the danger that he presents, to look at, what he was willing to do to stay in a power,” Cheney said in an interview on ABC News’s “This Week.”
Cheney, who became one of Trump’s most outspoken critics following the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection, threw her support behind Vice President Harris last week in what she claims will be her first vote for a Democrat.
The former Wyoming Republican shared that her first presidential vote was for Reagan’s 1984 run and that she has never voted for a Democrat in her life. However, the “stakes” of this election will change Cheney’s record.
Cheney on Sunday said Trump’s policy stances and attempts to remain in power after his 2020 election loss show a “firm rejection,” not just of “traditional Republican policies, but at the Constitutional order on which this country depends.”
She lauded Harris’s nomination acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention, stating it was a speech that Reagan or former President George Bush could have given.
“It’s very much an embrace and an understanding of the exceptional nature of this great nation, a love of America, a recognition that America is a special place, a recognition that we all have to work together to ensure that,” she said. “You contrast that with what we hear from Donald Trump again on a daily basis, that America is a failing nation, that America is a laughing stock.”
A day after Cheney officially announced her support for Harris, her father, former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney, also backed the vice president.
The former vice president said in a statement that Americans “have a duty” to defend the Constitution, regardless of political party.
“In our nation’s 248-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump,” he wrote. “He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him. He can never be trusted with power again.”
