On Thursday, President Joe Biden addressed reporters from the White House following a landmark prisoner exchange involving Russia and several other nations. This exchange resulted in the release of former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan and Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, among others.
Surrounded by family members of U.S. citizens and residents detained in Russia, including Whelan, Gershkovich, Alsu Kurmasheva, and Vladimir Kara-Murza, Biden shared the joyous news of their release. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan had previously announced that Biden had convened these families to deliver the good news.
“This is a very good afternoon,” Biden remarked, celebrating the successful resolution of the hostage situation.
As Biden concluded his remarks, a reporter posed a question regarding former President Donald Trump’s recent claim that he could have secured the hostages’ release without making any concessions
“Mr. President, Trump said he could’ve gotten the hostages out without giving anything in exchange. What’s your response?” the reporter asked.
Biden’s sharp retort was: “Why didn’t he do it when he was president?”
The President’s response sparked a notable reaction from CNN host Dana Bash, who described the moment as a “mic drop.”
