‘Pay a price’: Mitch McConnell said to have backed Jack Smith’s charges against Trump

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) supported the federal charges Donald Trump faces by special counsel Jack Smith resulting from the former president’s alleged election subversion efforts in 2020, according to a new book.

Raw Story recently reported on an upcoming political biography by Michael Tackett, deputy Washington bureau chief of The Associated Press, and what it says about McConnell’s thoughts on the ex-president. Tackett’s book, “The Price of Power,” reportedly reveals that McConnell called Donald Trump a “narcissist” and a “despicable human being,” among other things.

New reporting suggests McConnell went even further in his previously unreported critical commentary, saying he deeply considered voting yes on impeaching Trump and did support criminal charges against him for his actions surrounding the election.

Specifically, McConnell made comments fully supporting the charges against Trump in connection with the riot of Jan. 6, Axios reported.

“In a biography set to publish a week before the election, Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell backed special counsel Jack Smith and said he hopes former President Trump will ‘pay a price’ for his role in Jan. 6th,” according to Axios. “McConnell has long been a Trump critic, but a new book throws his weight behind some of the most serious federal charges against Trump.”

The outlet further quotes McConnell from the book, saying he said, “If he hasn’t committed indictable offenses, I don’t know what one is.” McConnell further said, “there’s no doubt who inspired [the Capitol attack], and I just hope that he’ll have to pay a price for it,” the outlet reported.
