Rhetorical Irony: JD Vance Says It’s Wrong For Democrats to Call Trump a ‘Fascist’, Then CNN Rolls The Tape on Trump’s Rhetoric Against Harris
Senator JD Vance’s recent criticism of Democrats for labeling Donald Trump a “fascist” highlights a striking hypocrisy in the ongoing debate over political rhetoric. While Vance chastises opponents for their language, he conveniently ignores the violent and incendiary rhetoric Trump has directed at his adversaries.
On Tuesday’s CNN NewsNight, a montage aired that captured the former president’s extreme statements, raising critical questions about the nature of political discourse in America. In light of a potential assassination attempt near Trump’s golf course, Republicans have intensified their attacks on Democrats for portraying Trump as a “threat to democracy.” Vance argued that while political disagreements are natural, branding someone a fascist is an unacceptable escalation.
“We can disagree with one another,” he stated. “But we cannot tell the American people that one candidate is a fascist and if he’s elected, it is gonna be the end of American democracy.”
However, CNN host Abby Phillip promptly pointed out the contradiction in Vance’s stance. She reminded viewers that Trump himself has frequently used similar, if not more extreme, language. The montage included clips from various Trump rallies where he labeled opponents as “communist,” “Marxist,” and mockingly referred to Vice President Kamala Harris as “Comrade.”
“If comrade Kamala Harris gets four more years, you will be living [in] a full-blown banana republic ruled by an anarchy and a tyranny… They’re scum. They’re scum and they want to take down our country. They are absolute garbage,” Trump said during one of his rallies.
The clips also included Trump’s infamous remarks from January 6, 2021, when he warned that if Congress certified Biden’s election victory, “America as we know it would be over.” While urging supporters to march “peacefully,” he incited them with the admonition, “If you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore.”
