A Michigan man has been arrested for allegedly attacking a Black postal worker with a knife, fueled by anger over receiving political mail for Vice President Kamala Harris. The incident took place in Farmington Hills, a suburb of Detroit, where 61-year-old Russell Frank Valleau was charged on Friday with assault and ethnic intimidation, the latter carrying a maximum penalty of two years in prison.
Valleau, who identifies as an “ultra-MAGA Trump supporter,” reportedly confronted the U.S. Postal Service mail carrier, hurling racial slurs and threatening her with a knife. The postal worker, fearing for her safety, used her service-issued pepper spray to fend him off.
According to Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald, Valleau’s actions stemmed from his frustration over receiving election materials related to Harris.
“The defendant was upset that he had received mail regarding presidential candidate Kamala Harris, and allegedly said that he did not want that ‘black b**ch’ in his mailbox,” McDonald said in a statement, highlighting the racial nature of the attack. “He then called the mail carrier a ‘black bch’ and threatened her.”
The altercation occurred around 5 p.m. when the mail carrier called for assistance, reporting that Valleau appeared intoxicated and was upset about the campaign advertisements. After being sprayed, Valleau fled the scene but was later found and arrested in a neighboring yard.
Public records indicate that Valleau has a long history of criminal behavior, including convictions for aggravated stalking, domestic violence, and firearm possession by a felon. He is described as a white male, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 155 pounds.
In response to the incident, Prosecutor McDonald emphasized the importance of protecting individuals from hate crimes.
“In this highly charged political moment, everyone has a right to their political opinion and vote,” she said. “Whatever our political beliefs, no one should be assaulted or threatened because of their race or for doing their job. Hate crimes impact all of us, and we will vigorously pursue all such cases.”
